Dolphin Galleries

Founder Stephen W. Schlag, wanting to display items that echoed his passion for both sailing and diving, started a small store in Lahaina, on the island of Maui in 1976. His gallery would become famous for its affiliations with Marine Life artist Wyland and wood-carver Randy Puckett, which helped establish it as one of the premier markets for marine art, unique gifts, collectible glass, and fine jewelry.

In 1985, Schlag opened a new store in nearby Whaler’s Villiage, and formally entered the art market in Maui. Soon after, Dutch sculptor Loet Vanderveen, and Island artist Gayle Bright, famous for her African animal collections made from 14K and 18K gold, began displaying their work at Schlag’s gallery. Opening another studio, as well as a jewelry and art gallery, Dolphin has forever changed the ambiance of the Kaanapali region. In 2003, Schlag turned his attention toward Oahu, where he opened both a Jewelry Gallery and an Art Gallery in The Hilton Hawaiian Village in Waikiki.

Dolphin Galleries’ mantra is to show best of the most sought-after island artists such as George Allan, Betty Hay Freeland, and Janet Davis. Schlag has turned “that wonderful little gift shop” into a Hawaiian art empire.
