Rolls-Royce Offers Bespoke Picnic Set
By Asa Drake • Jul 29th, 2010 • Category: News & NoteworthyAlthough best known for their luxury cars, Rolls-Royce now offers picnic sets, each of which is made to order. Inspired by the 1920’s, the elegant four person picnic set offers a glimpse into a whimsical golden era where dining meant more than food. Gavin Hartley, Rolls-Royce Motor Cars bespoke design manager, explains that “The creation of a bespoke picnic set was always a question of entertainment, not just functionality. You choose to eat outdoors and you want to do it in an entertaining and elegant way, to make an occasion of the experience. Our design encapsulates that approach.” And indeed it does.
Benchmarked against the company’s opulent automobiles, the picnic set still holds its own thanks to the skilled designers at Goodwood, the headquarters and manufacturing site for Rolls-Royce Motor Cars. They have modernized the traditional picnic set, constructing a leather folded front that provides the same air flow usually found in wicker products. As with their automotives, Rolls-Royce wanted the set to display both their innovation and signature style. Around six months and 1,500 hours went into the luxury picnic set’s creation resulting in a design that takes advantage of “the way things open out.” According to Hartley, the picnic set provokes “a sense of unpacking. It’s exciting and surprising and exceeds expectations. You might think it’s a box, but when you open it out, it presents owners with useful surfaces like drop-down tables.”
While a commissionable item, the Rolls Royce bespoke picnic set is priced around €15,000.
