Ferrari 599 GTO: Street Legal Mischief
By Andrew Seagrave • • Category: Automobile, News & Noteworthy
The new Ferrari is not for the faint of heart. Described as “the quickest and fastest road car the company has ever built,” the Ferrari 599 GTO is a mighty step above the already potent 599 GTB. The GTO’s 6.0-liter V-12 is a descendant of the race -tuned (track only) 599XX’s power-horse, but slightly modified for legal road use. Compared to the GTB, the horsepower jumped up from 612 to 661, and the torque exploded from 448 foot-pounds to 457.
In addition to the GTO’s astonishing inner-power, performance enhancements were also made to the outer workings. New ground hugging bodywork, an upturned rear spoiler and new 20 -inch wheels enhance the GTO’s aerodynamic efficiency. The lighter (430 pounds less than the GTB) aluminum alloy body and newly thin plated glass definitely have made this a much faster animal. It swiftly accelerates from 0-62mps in 3.35 seconds, and defiantly reaches speeds exceeding 208 mph. The GTO holds a price tag of about $400,000, roughly $40,000 more than the GTB, and options include: full leather interior ($5,500), four-point competition seat belts ($3,700), and a roll bar ($3,850).
