As part of Sotheby’s Evening Sale of Impressionistic & Modern Art next month, the Alberto Giacometti sculpture L’Homme qui marche I will go under the mallet. Set to take place February 3rd in London, this bronze masterpiece is expecting to fetch between $19-29 Million.
This will be the first time a Giacometti figure of a walking man in this large a size will be auctioned in more than 20 years. Also, this specific model carries the distinction of being a life-time cast. Originally cast in 1961, it was part of the corporate collection of Dresdner Bank AG, who acquired it around 1980. The work came into the possession of Commerzbank AG after the latter’s takeover of Dresdner Bank last year.
Before to the sale, this work of art will be on view at Sotheby’s New York galleries from January 20-22. The last time a cast of L’homme qui marche appeared at an auction was in November 1988. That particular cast sold for $6.83 million, which at the time was a record.
All Proceeds from the sale will go towards supporting Commerzbank’s foundations as well as selected museums.
