$70 Million Steam Yacht Owned by Horace Dodge for Sale
By timbaysinger • Jan 25th, 2010 • Category: News & Noteworthy, YachtingAs one of the last great private steamships of the 1920s, the SS Delphine stands as a nostalgic look back at the early 20th century. This amazing ship can be yours for $70 million.
Owned by motorcar magnate Horace Dodge, this yacht was built in 1921 at the Great Lakes Engineering Works in Michigan, in an effort to outdo rival mogul J.P. Morgan’s Cosair. Measuring at 257 ft long, the interior was fitted by Tiffany & Co.
During World War II this ship was pressed into service, and was the flagship for Admiral Ernest Joseph King (Commander-in-Chief of the U.S. Navy). It has been said that this vessel served as the initial meeting place between Winston Churchill and President Franklin Roosevelt.
Undergoing a complete restoration that spanned from February 1998 to July 2003, this stunning beauty is back in its former glory after years of deterioration. The ship can accommodate up to 26 guests and 28 crew members; there’s a music salon, cinema, fitness center, spa, sauna, smoking room, swimming pool and original fixtures like the telegraph machine in the mahogany pilothouse.
If you want to give this liner a tryout, the Delphine can be charted for a price of $90,000 per day.
