By timbaysinger • • Category: Automobile, News & NoteworthyBack in 2006, Rolls-Royce Motor Cars announced that they were beginning to build a new model series. Codenamed “RR4,” the only known facts were that it would be smaller than the Phantom Saloon…
Fast-forward to September 2009 – the world was officially introduced to the 2011 Rolls-Royce Ghost.
Set to go on sale by the end of the year, it is expected to be priced at $245,000 before taxes.
Sporting a brand new 6.6 liter twin-turbo V12 engine – designed specifically for this model – the Ghost can burst from 0-60 mph in under five seconds. With a top speed of 155 mph, this car produces 780 nm of torque at only 1,500 rpm, while only emitting 317 g/km of CO2 and getting a little less than 21 mpg.
With a 10-channel amplifier powering its 16 speakers, including two floor-mounted subwoofers, Rolls-Royce’s follow-up to the Phantom series delivers an auditory experience like no other. USB and auxiliary inputs allow for the integration of external audio devices and a 12.5 GB hard drive enables storage of music files from USB or CD player sources.
Rolls-Royce’s newest series also boasts a series of electronic aids to maintain its composure on any surface. These features include Anti-Roll Stabilization, Dynamic Brake and Stability Control, Dynamic Traction Control, and Cornering Brake Control.
Tricky maneuvers become a cinch with rear, front side, and top view cameras that combine to cover all blind spots and provide ground views with obstacle recognition/reverse path prediction. No need to be afraid of the dark as the Ghost sports a night-vision camera that can detect objects up to 300 meters away.
While the much anticipated vehicle has some of the classic Rolls-Royce design features – elevated prow, long bonnet, short front overhang, sharply raked A-pillar and elegant tail – it also sports new elements designed specifically for this model. New features include self-righting wheel centers, the latest version of the Rolls-Royce grille framed by Xenon headlamps, and an all-around “Yacht Line” styling.
Backseat passengers are sure to love the two 9.2 inch LCD screens staring at them from the back of the front seats. These screens will allow riders to make themselves comfortable without affecting the driver.
Only leather from bulls raised in pastures without barbed wire is used, ensuring it comes with fewer imperfections. Instead of painted, the hides are drum-dyed so the color is infused with the leather.
The Ghost is available in 12 exterior colors, each of which can be contrasted by the optional Silver Satin bonnet.
